Even during periods without significant changes to applications or software, the consumption of technical IT resources often increases steadily. The apparent organic growth is of course only the sum of a long series of smaller technical, functional and behaviour-related changes.

The growth is often highest around natural peak periods. Since installed machine capacity must be able to drive even peak loads, the sum of small changes can have a serious impact on operational costs.
