Common terms

Any profession creates its own expressions, sometimes almost an entire language, and most organisations even develop their own version or “dialect” over time. Add to that how a company is normally divided into organisational units, each with their own purpose and responsibility. It is clear how terms used within one unit may be unknown or perceived differently within another.

If an organisational unit is isolated from the others, the language gap alone could end up becoming an obstacle for normal communication. Many IT operations departments have suffered such isolation, one of their major goals being “invisibility” (since the business only seems to notice when there is a problem).
